In the year 200X, a new breakthrough was made in the field of robotics. Doctors Thomas Light and Albert Wily succeeded in creating the first sentient humanoid robot. This paved the way for a new era of peace, with robots working alongside humans-- or so Dr. Light had hoped.

Instead, Dr. Wily went insane, stealing many of the robots he and Dr. Light had worked on together and reprogramming them to help him take over the world. He was stopped, however, by a young robot named Rock, who was retrofitted by his father, Dr. Light, to combat Wily's army. His heroism earned him the admiration of many and the title "Mega Man."

The following decades of 200X-20XX were marked by various 'Robot Wars', as Dr. Wily time and again attempted to take over the world, and was summarily defeated. Dr. Light saw Rock as his own son—but he also saw the limits the little robot's design gave him. Rock's programming could only give him so much freedom from human control. Dr. Light set out to create a new robot, brother to Rock, who would be truly independent from human control. This android, who would later be known as Mega Man X, had the exact same emotional and decision-making capabilities as a human being.

However, tragedy struck. Sometime after 20XX, a catastrophe known only as the 'Cataclysm' befell humankind. No one knows for certain what happened, but when the dust settled much of the world was uninhabitable, and Dr. Light and his creations were lost to time. For 100 years, X remained asleep in a capsule, knowing nothing about his father, siblings, or the purpose of his creation.

In the year 21XX, a human paleobotanist named Dr. Cain stumbled across the remains of Dr. Light's laboratory quite by accident. Finding the sleeping X and awakening him, he soon realized he had a monumental discovery. Adopting the robot, Dr. Cain then set out to replicate X's design. Though the brilliance of Dr. Light's engineering could not be duplicated directly, Dr. Cain succeeded in creating a race of 'reploids' with intellectual capability similar to X's own. Time passed and reploids became common, working alongside humans.

However, with new robots came problems. Some reploids developed problems in their programming, turning violent and harming their creators. A special reploid police force was developed to combat these 'mavericks,' hunting them down and destroying them before they could harm civilians. Though X was a pacifist at heart, he eventually joined this group of Maverick Hunters, feeling it his duty to protect humanity and reploid innocents.

The situation only worsened. Sigma, the commander of the Maverick Hunters at the time, began behaving erratically. Eventually he completely broke away, taking with him many of the top level Maverick Hunters and declaring war on the human race. It soon became apparent that Sigma was controlled by an extremely sophisticated computer virus called the "Maverick Virus," which drove the reploid host insane. Mega Man X, left as one of the only sane Hunters, went out to combat Sigma. With some help from his best friend Zero, X succeeded in defeating Sigma and ending the First Maverick Rebellion.

However, Sigma's threat did not end there. Sigma, now part of the Maverick Virus, was able to survive in various other forms, threatening the world numerous times. As one of the Maverick Hunter's top soldiers, X now fights against Sigma and his Mavericks and attempts to make the world safe for both humans and reploids. So far the war is far from over, but X is confident that some day soon, he will end the Maverick threat for good and allow all people to live in everlasting peace.
